Third-cycle education in Sweden has two levels of qualification: the Degree of Doctor and the Degree of Licentiate. Both of these are offered as general and fine arts degrees.

Doctoral degree

A doctoral degree covers 240 credits and is equivalent to four years of full-time education.

To complete the degree it is necessary to pass all the courses included in the programme and to complete a pass-grade thesis worth at least 120 credits.

The examination is called the public defence of doctoral thesis.

Licentiate degree

A licentiate degree covers at least 120 credits, equivalent to at least two years of full-time education.

To complete the degree it is necessary to pass all the courses included in the programme and to complete a pass-grade thesis worth at least 60 credits.
