If you’ve completed a degree programme abroad, you can supplement it with additional studies in Sweden. To be entitled to work in some professions in Sweden, supplementing your degree is required.

It’s possible for you to supplement your degree or qualification if it was awarded by a university abroad. Supplementing gives you the knowledge you need to be able to work in your profession in Sweden.

You might need to complete a supplementary programme to be entitled to use your foreign qualification for a regulated profession in Sweden. By completing the programme, you’ll receive the necessary qualification to be able to work in your profession. This might be a certificate or licence.

Supplementary programmes for regulated professions

These 1–2 year programmes qualify for student finance.

You can supplement your qualification if you have a foreign degree in biomedical science. This will enable you to apply for a Swedish biomedical scientist licence from the National Board of Health and Welfare. Programmes are offered by Uppsala University, the University of Gothenburg, Linköping University and Kristianstad University. The programmes are taught in Swedish.

If you received your dentistry degree abroad, you can access supplementary programmes at the University of Gothenburg, Malmö University or Karolinska Institutet. The programmes are taught in Swedish.

Supplementary programmes are available if you completed your medical degree abroad. They're offered by the University of Gothenburg, Linköping University, Lund University or Karolinska Institutet (60 credits). Umeå University also offers a two-year distance learning programme at 50% pace (120 credits). All programmes are taught in Swedish.

This programme supplements midwifery qualifications issued in a country outside of the EU/EEA and Switzerland. By completing the programme, you’ll be eligible to apply for a Swedish midwifery licence. The programme is given by Karolinska Institutet. It involves both theoretical components and a clinical placement. The programme is taught in Swedish.

The programmes are aimed at those who have received approval from the National Board of Health and Welfare to participate in a supplementary programme for nurses with degrees from a country outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland. The programmes are offered by Karolinska Institutet, the University of Gothenburg, Luleå University of Technology, Linnaeus University and the University of Gävle. The programmes are taught in Swedish.

Supplementary programmes for foreign pharmacy degrees are given by the University of Gothenburg or Uppsala University (distance learning course). The programmes are taught in Swedish.

Lund University, Umeå University and Uppsala University (90 credits) offer supplementary programmes to people with psychology degrees from abroad. The programmes are taught in Swedish.
