Vehicle Engineering is a broad area of engineering science driven by an ever-increasing degree of mobility in the world. Transport, however, must face the challenge of minimising its environmental impact, requiring new, innovative solutions and capable engineers. This is a field that will continually demand specialists in order to make the transition to sustainable road and rail transport in the future.Programme outlineThe programme consists of two tracks: Road Vehicles and Rail Vehicles, followed by four different profiles: structural design, functional design, control design and transport systems.The Road Vehicle specialisation includes all road vehicles with a main focus on cars, trucks and buses. In the Rail Vehicle specialisation, the system aspect is very important, as the different parts of a railway system vehicle, track, electrification and signalling all strongly influence each other.Degree projectStudents admitted to the programme are required to perform an independent study in the form of a degree project. This can either be performed at a university or, more commonly, at a company.The student is encouraged to actively search for a suitable thesis project in industry, and KTH will provide assistance and suitable points of contact.Career prospectsThe programme provides an excellent basis for pursuing a career in the global vehicle industry, as a consulting engineer, or as a PhD student. The co-operation between the Swedish vehicle industry and the department of Vehicle and Aeronautical Engineering is very close, and there are several major ongoing research programmes where KTH, key manufacturers and the road and rail administrations are involved.Changes in the programme may occur.
